About GRIT
The GRIT Story: 20 Years in the Making
Our Legacy (2007–2020)
GRIT wasn’t built overnight. The seeds were planted in 2007 with the Grand Rapids Youth Athletics Organization, which eventually transformed into the West Michigan chapter of American Youth Football (AYF). For nearly two decades, we operated on the front lines, fueled by small sponsorships, family car washes, and the personal finances of founders who refused to let our kids go without.
We’ve seen the power of the game from every angle. We’ve seen it save lives, and we’ve seen it build the men our community needs.

The Challenge Facing Today's Youth
Today, the world looks different than it did in 2007. Families are more fragmented, resources are tighter, and the "Opportunity Gap" in West Michigan has become a canyon. Our youth are facing a crisis of direction. With limited community support and broken family structures, our kids are being pulled toward illicit lifestyles simply because they don't see another path.
They face challenges unlike any generation before them. Social media, technology, mental health pressures, substance abuse, economic uncertainty, and limited access to mentorship have created significant obstacles for many young people, especially those in underserved communities.

What We’re Facing
This isn’t random.
It’s a pattern.
An unnecessary cycle.
And too many of our youth are getting caught in it.
-
Youth getting involved in theft, violence, and crime
-
Shootings that are ending lives too early
-
Gangs replacing real brotherhood
-
Kids searching for identity in the wrong places

The Real Problem
These situations don’t happen in isolation.
They are often the result of:
-
Unstable or challenging home environments
-
Lack of consistent mentorship programming
-
Limited access to structured programs
-
Financial barriers to sports and development opportunities
-
Too much unstructured time with the wrong influences
For many community youth…
The streets become mentor and teacher.
And that path rarely ends well for anyone.

The Turning Point
Over time, one truth stood out:
Too many talented kids never get a real shot.
Not because they lack ability…
But because they lack:
-
Access
-
Opportunity
-
Guidance
-
Exposure to something greater
And without those things…
The streets step in.

Why GRIT Exists
Preparing youth for opportuities tomorrow.
GRIT exists to change that outcome.
We are here to create an environment where youth are:
-
Surrounded by strong mentorship
-
Developed in character and discipline
-
Held to academic standards
-
Exposed to new opportunities and possibilities
-
Given structure, purpose, and direction
This is about building complete young men…
Not just athletes. Building up youth who get overlooked.

The Mission
Over time, one truth stood out:
To give every young athlete…
No matter their background…
A real opportunity to:
-
Grow
-
Learn
-
Compete
-
Be seen
-
Create opportunity
-
Prepare for high school and college
-
Exposure to career opportunities for the future
See and believe in something bigger than they currently see.

Because This Isn’t Just Sports
This is about changing trajectories.
-
Changing mindsets.
-
Changing lives.
-
Because when you give a young person:
-
Structure + Mentorship + Opportunity
Everything can change.
This Is GRIT
