Opening Doors Through Mentorship and Football
GRIT creates access, builds discipline, and shows young people that no matter their circumstances, a path forward exists.

At GRIT, we recognize that many inner-city youth in Grand Rapids face limited access to consistent mentorship, structured opportunities, and exposure to positive pathways for their future. Without guidance, too many young people are left to navigate challenges on their own, academically, socially, and personally. That’s where GRIT steps in.
We are more than football; we use the game as a bridge to open doors that many of these youth might otherwise never see. Through mentorship, discipline, and real-life guidance, we help them understand the importance of education, making positive decisions, and staying focused despite their circumstances.
Football brings them in, but what we provide goes far beyond the field. We show them that no matter where they come from, there is opportunity, purpose, and a path forward. As a community, it is our responsibility to build that pathway and help develop the next generation into strong, accountable, and impactful members of society.
We empower the next generation by providing urban athletes with access to high-performance facilities and data-driven training. This innovative model shifts the mindset of our participants, proving they are worthy of the same elite resources as any athlete in the country. We don’t just improve footwork on a 100-yard field; we build the confidence needed to succeed in any arena.
True opportunity is created by bridging the gap between untapped local talent and the gatekeepers of higher education. Our College Exposure Series introduces youth to the academic and athletic expectations of Michigan College programs like Western Michigan, GVSU, Calvin, Hope, Ferris State, and more. We aren't just teaching kids how to compete on Friday nights; we are providing a roadmap to the university lecture halls that define their future.
Rooted in the legacy of Evan’s Light, our program uses every drill to build character. By removing financial barriers and requiring a "skin in the game" commitment, we foster a culture of accountability and pride. We are developing more than just athletes—we are cultivating disciplined, visionary leaders equipped to innovate and lead their communities for years to come.
At GRIT, we believe college awareness must start early. By partnering with premier institutions across Michigan, we open the door to the university experience for youth ages 8 to 13.
We move beyond the "concept" of college, giving our athletes a tangible look at campus life and academic expectations so they can see themselves in those seats one day.
Our partnerships focus on Vision & Literacy, not just athletics. When guest coaches join our sessions, they bring a roadmap for success that includes GPA requirements and character standards. This direct exposure breaks down psychological barriers in urban communities, replacing uncertainty with a clear understanding of the academic milestones needed to unlock their future.
Ultimately, these connections empower the entire family. We provide resources on scholarships and financial literacy while fostering a direct line to higher education mentors. By building this pipeline, we ensure our athletes are equipped to do more than just play at the next level; they are prepared to graduate and return to their communities as leaders.
The pro mindset applies to every career path, not just sports. We introduce our athletes to the skilled trades and high-demand industries that drive the Michigan economy. By partnering with local trade unions and businesses, we show our youth that mastery in electrical, plumbing, construction, or tech is a prestigious and high-paying pathway to independence and community leadership.
Our program emphasizes the link between athletic discipline and professional trades. The same grit required to master a playbook is what makes a successful master electrician or project manager. Through hands-on workshops and local site visits, we break the stigma surrounding vocational careers and provide our youth with a clear vision of how they can build, power, and lead their communities as skilled professionals.
In honor of Evan’s Light, we focus on providing a secure future through career literacy. By exposing youth to these opportunities early, we empower them to make informed choices about their education and vocational training. Whether they choose the university path or a specialized trade, GRIT ensures they have the foundational skills, the professional network, and the character needed to thrive in the modern workforce.
